Amaravati Secretariat Building's Raft Foundation Revealed After Years of Water Submersion

The raft foundation of the Amaravati Secretariat Building, submerged in water for nearly five years, has finally been revealed after extensive dewatering efforts. The foundation, which remained intact despite years of neglect, was uncovered on January 19, 2025, following a 24-day dewatering operation. The project had been stalled due to political and administrative challenges, leaving the foundation submerged under 16 feet of water.

The dewatering process, which began on December 25, 2024, involved the use of eight heavy-duty motors brought in from Mumbai. The operation successfully removed water from Blocks 1 and 2, exposing the raft foundation and cross pillars. However, Blocks 3, 4, and 5 still have significant water accumulation, and officials estimate it will take more time to fully drain these areas. Additionally, a layer of mud remains at the base of the exposed foundation, which will need to dry before it can be removed.

The Secretariat Building project, aimed to construct a 40-50 story complex with five towers. However, the project was abandoned after the change in government, leading to the foundation being submerged for years. The current coalition government has prioritized reviving the project, with tenders expected to be finalized soon. Experts from IIT Hyderabad and IIT Madras have confirmed the structural integrity of the foundation, assuring that it remains undamaged despite prolonged water exposure.

The revelation of the foundation marks a significant step forward in the development of Amaravati as Andhra Pradesh's capital. The government plans to resume construction soon, with the aim of completing the Secretariat Building as a symbol of the state's progress and resilience.
